NEWSHeighten Your Wintertime Flying Fun with a TrickAir Ski-equipped Legend Cub

Approval of the Legend Cub for operation on skis was finalized last year. That snow is gone and winter is upon us again! In 2008, many owners are anticipating the opportunity for snow, ice, and scenic wintertime flying in their Legend Cub. TrickAir skis deliver on this unique opportunity.

American Legend was the first new light-sport aircraft manufacturer to offer skis as an option. The Legend Cub utilizes a wheel penetration ski design by folks who know airplanes on skis—TrickAir of Weyauwega, Wisconsin. A ski-equipped Legend Cub can takeoff, land and taxi on snow, ice, grass and even hard surfaced runways without the need to change.

A ski-equipped Legend Cub allows avid pilots to fly every chance they get, even as snow and ice cover their favorite runways. The classic tailwheel design of the Legend Cub lends itself intrinsically to flying with skis. The result is wintertime recreational flying and satisfying the flying bug year round.

NEWSNeed Tailwheel Instruction-Endorsement-Refresher?

Tailwheel specific training on the Legend Cub is almost always a concern for new customers. It goes without saying that proper flying instruction, and keeping one’s skills current, should be a priority for any pilot. With this in mind, American Legend Aircraft Company has partnered with Carol Walker, CFI, to provide tailwheel instruction specific to the operation of the Legend Cub.

Walker operates a flying school in Midlothian, Texas, 100 miles southwest of Sulphur Springs. She specializes in tailwheel instruction and Sport Pilot training. Carol is a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner and Certified Flight Instructor, and has familiarity and strong ties to the Legend Cub.

Carol Walker commented, “Students are often rapt by the differences in flying a tailwheel aircraft. They tell me this is what real flying feels like.” She added, “Legend customers that I have spoken with are thrilled with the support provided by the company. I have enjoyed visiting the factory; the people are great. The Legend Cub is well crafted and a thing of beauty. I am pleased to partner with American Legend and to preserve experiences of tailwheel flying.”

Carol Walker is a full time flight instructor. She performed the majority of her private and commercial training in tailwheel aircraft. Walker has flown over 4,000 hours in over 40 different types of tailwheel aircraft. She presently operates a 150-horsepower Citabria.

NEWSDistributor Update

The number of inquiries from our previous announcement on factory representation was delightfully robust. Interest in the Legend Cub is strong as evidenced. Our intent to enlist distributors is first and foremost to represent Legend Cub owners. American Legend feels that we can best service some customers on the local level.

To date the majority of Legend Cubs are based in Texas and Florida—perhaps a testament to great flying weather in these states. But these states represent only one-third of the current fleet. Sales and distributor inquiries have come from across the U.S. including the northeast, southeast, west coast and central U.S. We’ve even had interest from Canada and the U.K. which presents unique hurdles, as the LSA standard to which the Legend Cub is certified is presently a U.S.-only adaptation. Additional sales inquiries have come from around the world, including Australia, Africa, Germany, Portugal, and even from South America, where customers would like to fly their very own Legend Cub in Brazil and Chile.

We encourage all interested parties to be patient as we sort through the many new opportunities to work with representatives near and far. American Legend is a phenomenon. The spirit of flying certainly lives on is this classic aircraft design. Getting things right is part preserving the culture and part a new opportunity to return to flying’s roots. At American Legend, we feel there’s still no better way to fly low and take in the scenery than in a Legend Cub.

LIFESTYLESlipping Into the Keys

The Jabiru engine is really great and has the other Cub competitors beat in climb, speed, fuel economy and increased useful load. With all the manufacturers in the world jumping on this LSA bandwagon it gets tougher all the time to compete, but one thing will always stand out—Legend is a real aircraft company here in the U.S.

I just went flying this morning so I’ll send you a couple pics to see my local area. I decided to come in high on final to practice a slip, since it had been a while. I did a full rudder slip on final at about 52 indicated airspeed, flying sideways, let the slip go at about 20 feet AGL and did a beautiful 3-point landing. I spent the next 2 hours waxing it to say thank you. I am in love with my airplane.

LIFESTYLELeisurely, Scenic, Low-demand Flying

“Life is good” was the subject of an email recently sent to American Legend. It was sent by a Legend Cub owner, and very outspoken proponent of the company. The editor asked this owner about the kind of flying he likes to do in his Legend Cub. He stated that he revels in taking a leisurely tour around his home state of Arkansas. In commenting on whom he flies with, this pilot replied, “Me and anybody I can get to climb in the plane with me. My Legend Cub has put fun back into flying for me. It lends itself so readily to leisurely, scenic, low-demand flying.”

Joe Edwards was introduced to flying by his father, a test pilot for Cessna. Joe is now in his sixties and boasts having had the flying bug since he was a teenager. He first met American Legend at Sun ‘n Fun this past April. What impressed him most about Legend was the attention to detail and the apparent quality of the Legend Cub. Edwards has rebuilt planes in the past. He also owns another airplane, a Beech Bonanza. Adding that he is in a position to know the difference, he stated, “The Legend Cub is one of the best around.” He reaffirmed, “It is the best quality product on the market.”
