NEWSTexas Sport On The Cover Of Kitplanes Magazine

Marc Cook calls the Texas Sport, "Classic Cub perfection that you can now build yourself." Here are some excerpts from the article:

The Texas Sport Cub is, in every way, simply a Cub done smart. Flying qualities are classic Cub—actually, better.

This is about flying low over open land at sunset. Seeing your town from 1000 feet AGL.

Perfecting those takeoffs and landings after work during those long days of summer.

You fly with your eyes outside the cockpit, reacquainted with the wonder of flight.

NEWSOld School, New Plane - Build A Cub With You In Mind

The American Legend Cub may be an old school design, but it’s a whole new airplane built expressly for today’s pilots. The Legend Cub was developed from the ground up as recently as 2005. As one would expect, a contemporary airplane must incorporate the latest in features.

A wide range of options available for the Legend Cub enhance the safety, operation, and joy of ownership of this aircraft, among these are:

  • Landing options:
    • Skis for snow and ice operations, and scenic wintertime flying
    • Floats for smooth water landings
    • Standard 6.00, larger 8.00, or tundra tires
  • Modern options:
    • Continental or Jabiru engine with wood, composite or metal prop
    • State-of-the-art Garmin avionics
    • Dynon glass cockpit PFD & EMS
  • Navigation options:
    • Autopilot and artificial horizon reduce workload and enhance the enjoyment of cross-country trips
    • Dual wing-mounted pulse landing light system greatly increases the airplane’s visibility and improves the pilot's vision in ground operations
  • Personal choice:
    • J-3, PA-11, Super Cub or L-4 paint plus cowling options
    • Leather or cloth interior, cabin lighting, vented windows, and XM radio entertainment
  • Safety options:
    • Airbag seatbelt system by AmSafe
    • Next generation 406 MHz ELT
Contemplating that perfect airplane? The answer is often found in a Legend Cub. With over 100 flying it has certainly proven itself in the recreational aircraft arena.

LIFESTYLE1st Texas Sport KwikBild Completed

How does one build an airplane amid family, school, and a career? The answer is easy… With the Texas Sport KwikBild program. Making family a big part of the project can be among its greatest rewards.

KwikBild first customer, Bob Declerck, had many great things to say about his Texas Sport kit-building experience…

The thought of one day building a real plane was always in the back of my mind. However, at first school and then later a career and raising a family always came first.

I mentioned to my family that I was thinking about building a plane. Their response surprised me. My wife said, “Go for it,” and my boys said, “Why wait!”

I learned to fly in a Cub and had a lot of fun flying them on wheels and skis before I went into the Air Force. I was unwilling to sacrifice family time for the many months, or even years, required to build the average kit. A few weeks at a time I could handle. Furthermore, it was an absolutely wonderful opportunity to bond with my two sons.

There is no way to adequately describe the feeling of seeing all the pieces come together. Then later, looking out the window at a plane you built as the sun starts to set is pure joy. This was truly the experience of a lifetime. My feet still haven’t touched the ground
.

Bob continues to enjoy his Texas Sport as he flies his self-crafted Cub from an unpaved strip in the Texas Hill Country. The word is, Bob is planning on building a second Texas Sport for family members. To read the whole story, go to www.legend.aero/customers.asp

LIFESTYLEProfessional Photographer, Airplane Collector, Friend Of Legend

Jim Wilson is a professional photographer, collector of airplanes, and a good friend here at American Legend. When you talk to Jim, you realize very quickly that his interests are people and airplanes. He’s a soft-spoken person. He’s a thinking man. Picture him posed with hand on chin, a thought-filled stare into space. That’s a likely self-portrait.

As one of American Legend’s earliest customers, Jim fell in love with the Legend Cub. Jim is a Texas resident, living less than two hours from the factory in Sulphur Springs, where he is a frequent visitor. Perhaps he can’t get enough of the airplanes being built there. Perhaps he enjoys the camaraderie. Likely, it’s both.

As I mentioned, Jim is a professional photographer. And at American Legend, the folks are truly blessed to have a friend like Jim. He travels with not only his great spirit, but always with a camera, or two, in tow. Some superb photos of the Legend Cub, in particular many of those used in company ads, print materials and elsewhere, are a credit to Jim’s professional talents.

From an early photo shoot, I recall Jim seated and belted sideways in a Legend Cub with his feet resting outside the cabin on the right wing struts. Flying in this position for hours one day in the designated camera ship, Jim never winced. The numbness in his legs was no match for his love affair with camera and Cubs.

I recall Jim's expression as he proudly showed the results of the photo shoot. Picture, if you will, a group of tired, parched and hungry men, sitting down for a belated meal. Jim stole the group's attention away from food and towards the enjoyment of his photos. His contemplative smile told a story of fulfillment quite like that of a satisfying meal.

You can see Jim’s photos at www.jimwilsonphotography.com, or www.legend.aero/gallery.

Jim also happens to be a devoted family man, and a grandfather of two future Cub pilots.

READBACKFrom Legend.aero

I saw and talked with the owner of a Legend Cub at the Valkaria Airport X59 in Florida this last Saturday. The reason I am so taken by the Cub is because when I was 17, I belonged to a flying club in Panama City Panama. We purchased two Piper J3s for about $2,000 each. The Piper Aircraft Co. put the complete aircraft in wooden crates and shipped them by train to New York where they were put on the deck of a U. S. Government ship and taken to Panama. Then they were hauled by flatbed truck. The flying club members were waiting and manhandled the boxes into the hanger at the defunct airport Paitilla. We removed the two J3s from their boxes and assembled them. I started taken lessons in these two J3s January 1941. I soloed in one of them April 24,1941. Needless to say that started years of flying until last year when my eyesight would not let me pass the medical. Now you must know why I like what you have done with the original design.

Takes me back sixty years.
Gord Merrifield, via email

Tav Lupton, one of your Legend owners, is a friend of mine. I recently went out to see his aircraft. I am an ex US Navy pilot, and am interested in owning a Legend and keeping it on my ranch. Need to build the grass runway and hanger.
Kirk Rimer, via email

Hi. My first solo was in a J3 cub in 1956. I have a friend who has never flown one. He is a pilot. He is also a Dr. (heart surgeon). He had his own King Air but is looking for a fun airplane.
George Shanks, via email

I am rather a Large guy 6'2" 250 lbs. Can the Legend Cub comfortable accommodate someone my size? Best Regards.
Kevin O'Donnell, via email

Editor: Yes it can, Kevin. Many a tall Legend customers have grown fond of their Legend Cubs. They would be happy to share their experiences with you.

MANUFACTURINGClyde Smith Seminar Hosted By American Legend

A builder's and operator's seminar was held at the facilities of American Legend on the weekend of March 22–24th. This seminar was given by the legendary Clyde Smith Jr. Dozens were on hand to listen, participate, and learn from the vast experiences of Clyde. Topics ranged from manufacturing, to maintenance to covering techniques. Participants came from as far as Alaska and New York. Mike Caraway of Keller, Texas, had the following to say about his experience:

I'm sure things are returning to normal by now after the Cub seminar weekend. I want to thank you guys for having it. I really learned alot and enjoyed meeting the rest of the guys in the class. I really was impressed with your factory. It was first class in all respects. And what a product. As a Cub owner for over 30 years, I was skeptical of how good a replacement for the original Cub your plane could be. It was terrific. Thanks for the ride Darin. You made me look good.
