NEWS The Sun 'n Fun Experience

Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Lakeland, Florida, and Back - 2009

Weather always seems to disrupt. The plan was to fly eastward, some 820 nautical from Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Lakeland, Florida. Several planned stops for fuel, a stretch, and re-hydration were touched on in the pre-flight discussions. The planning was a bit brief, but the route had been done before. Perhaps a dozen times or more.

Pre-flight inspections comprised of a four-airplane walkaround by eight experienced flyboy/builders. In all instances, the loading of baggage and the checklist reviews were performed in the very same hangar in which these four aircraft were built. There's comfort in being home, and equal amounts of excitement in leaving there.

Departure was initially planned for first sun on Friday. However, weather patterns predicted a build-up of precipitation. The vast air mass above the five southern states that border the Gulf of Mexico is often dampened by that large body of water. Northwesterly formed fronts build and burst as they move from Texas to Florida. 48 hours later the skies gave way. The bonus for waiting was a 15-knot tailwind.

Two Legend Cubs and two Texas Sports fashioned the covey. Two in the familiar yellow and two in regalia. All equipped with 100-horsepower Contis, yet each unique on the panel. The lead aircraft, painted like the Texas flag, had glass instrumentation and satellite weather. One yeller craft, having earlier this year completed today's route, was configured in the most popular Legend Cub options. Yeller number two was outfitted with the latest, lightest engine and the latest, largest GPS.

Taking up the tail was a silver edition Cub, emblazoned with logos of 30-plus vendors. "Billboard, you there?" Acknowledgement then regret. D'oh! that name's going to stick! "I'm one-half mile back at your seven o'clock." Eventful, yet uneventful, the cross-country in a covey Cubs was nothing short of memorable. Flying at minimums with a wisk of clear air swirling about the cabin and a windscreen of nature filling the space below a gently tilting horizon is a soul-cleansing experience.
