The Legend Cub Facebook

The success of American Legend Aircraft Company is predicated by the satisfaction of our customers. It is our desire to see that pilots, and passengers alike, enjoy the experiences of flying Legend Cubs whatever their destination. At American Legend, we pay special attention to our customer's needs. It is equally important for us to ensure that every Legend Cub performs as expected. We stand behind the airplanes we sell, from enriching the customer experience to providing dependable product support.

Customer Experiences

With Legend Cubs flying throughout the United States, the company feels to us like a growing family. We regularly hear stories from our customers. Invariably, each story seems like the kind of lasting memory that is passed along amongst friends and across generations. Legend Cubs are used in many ways by a group of pilots as diverse as the sky is wide. Here are some of the experiences of our customers and their Legend Cubs.

Carrier By Night, Cub By Day

When not flying freight carriers for Fedex, Trish Jackson enjoys piloting her new Legend Cub to fly-ins just for the fun of it. Taught by her mother, Trish learned to fly at the age of 13. She recounts one of her mother's lessons while flying, “Look at these rivers. It’s like god carved them out with his finger.”

Trish had previously owned other aircraft, including a vintage Cub. However, it took two years before deciding to make her next purchase a new Legend Cub. In 2010, Trish flew with the crew from the American Legend factory in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Lakeland, Florida for the annual Sun 'N Fun. She conceeded her decision to buy was based on "the attention to detail... and the double doors, a comfortable back seat, and the Legend Cub's open cockpit flying." Today, Trish enjoys being an active pilot with the ability to fly both carriers and Cubs.

Tailwheel Essentials

Legend Cub owner John Pipkin, and tailwheel instructor Kim Bevier, share their 27,000+ hours of combined flying experience to help others become better and safer pilots through video training.

Pipkin and Bevier produced the popular Tailwheel Essentials DVD. Tailwheeel Essentials distills flying a Cub into a seven-segment video. It covers virtually all aspects of flying tailwheel aircraft.

Tailwheel Essentials DVD highlights include:

  1. Showing you why tailwheel aircraft behave the way they do on the ground
  2. Teaching you ground handling, plus normal and crosswind takeoffs
  3. Showing you how to develop coordination and precision
  4. Teaching best practices for safe approaches including 3-point normal and crosswind landings, wheel landings, and the techniques and knowledge to master short field, soft field, and mixed conditions.

For more information on this professionally shot video, visit the Windsock Productions website at http://www.windsockproductions.com. Tailwheel Essentials DVD can be purchased online at http://shop.legend.aero.

Diamond Ranch

This new Legend Cub arrives at Diamond Ranch, the private strip in AZ where it will live. The Legend Cub slips in as it makes its first landing ever on the runway. Behind the airplane and above the runway is the guardrail for the highway--it's about a 20 ft obstacle for the runway.

Tailwheel Transition

I would like to be added to your list of instructors. I completed a tailwheel transition for a customer of yours--Chris Healy here in Ocala, Florida. I am affiliated with Ocala Aviation Services here in Ocala. You can see my profile on PilotOutlook.com. I have 270 hours of tailwheel most of which is instruction, plus ~75 hours in the American Legend Cub. Thanks.

Pizza Drops and Cow Spotting

I love flying flying my Legend Cub, especially when it comes to buzzing my friends. I recently made a pizza drop and two donut drops to a farmer friend in his cane field. I have also spotted cows for a relative after the hurricane--even took some storm photos for the local Abbeville Meridional newspaper. I've heard from other owners, what a great group of guys are the people at Legend. I have to agree and have become good friends with them. Just cant say enough good things about being an American Legend customer.

Setting a new standard for EFIS-equipped LSA

In the Fall of 2005, at a time when light-sport as a category was in its infancy, and certified, affordable avionics were the things of dreams, American Legend introduced a new aircraft designed around the simple idea of outside-the-cockpit flying. A compass, an altimeter, and a clear sky were the only navigational necessities.

Advanced electronics and sophisticated hardware were the spoils of cabin class, high-dollar aircraft. However, many pioneers in avionics began to change this notion. Garmin started making alluring, affordable, and highly useful avionics for the masses. Dynon broke ground bringing the glass panel to the small cockpit.

A pioneering spirit in California saw clearly the convergence of simple VFR flying and advanced avionics. Shortly thereafter, Roy Stephens of La Quinta, nee California desert, took delivery of the third production Legend Cub. (According to an unnamed contemporary source: La Quinta is Spanish for "well-equipped Cub").

Roy Stephens is a highly experienced pilot. He owns and flies numerous aircraft including a Cessna 180 taildragger. He elected to purchase a Legend Cub for its ability to be customized to his specifications. Stephens opted for an avionics suite to include a Garmin GPS and a Dynon EFIS. The TIS-capable Garmin GNC 420 GPS/Comm was accompanied by a Garmin 330 Transponder. The 420 has the added benefit of allowing the pilot to receive FAA Traffic Information Services (TIS) data. The Dynon Avionics EFIS-D100 features a substantial, 7-inch diagonal display. At the time Stephens took delivery, Dynon pronounced this to be the first production aircraft equipped with their D100.

A spokesman at American Legend Aircraft Company, commented, "You don't see too many Cubs with avionics like this. Some may say it's over doing it, but this customer is really excited about taking delivery of his well-equipped Legend Cub."

Today it seems many customers are opting for more avionics. The reason given is that while it's fun to fly with eyes focused outside the windscreen, it's sure nice to know that the instruments are there when you need them. Additionally, with supportive avionics, pilot workload is decreased on longer flights. And in reality, these advanced instruments are lots of fun to play with.

Trip Of A Lifetime

I hope this finds you well. Just thought you might enjoy hearing that s/n 1093 is performing very well--now 135 hours! My oldest son, Reese (10) and I will be flying it from Destin, Florida, to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and then back to Oshkosh in two weeks--nearly 1500 miles (from home in Atlanta)--to be returned later this fall by a good friend and his 10-year-old son. The trip will be somewhat covered in an article in World Aircraft Sales--documented through (my son) Reese's eyes. Will send you a copy in September.

Keep up the great work! Very best.

----

It was great to see you in Oshkosh--happy to hear business is still doing so well. If you ever need an endorsement or letter of recommendation, I am happy to testify to our pure enjoyment and absolute satisfaction with s/n 1093, and the customer service afforded by your company during and after completion.

Thought you might appreciate the attached photo--Reese and I after departure from OSH on Saturday evening. We flew roughly 1200 miles / 15 hours together--a trip of a lifetime, but one that will be repeated for many years to come!

Very best.

Legend Combat in Flying Museum

Legend Combat N532AK is based at Cannon Field in Somerset, Texas, south of San Antonio. This aircraft was manufactured in May 2006, and first flew from the factory to Hondo, Texas, for the EAA Southwest Regional Fly-in there in June. The Legend Combat was a dream of the late Alton Kenne, a member of the Alamo Liaison Squadron. Mr. Kenne flew the aircraft a mere 12 hours. Shortly after his passing, his wife Ellen agreed to keep the aircraft flying in the mission for which her husband had it built.

The Alamo Liaison Squadron (ALS) is a group of pilots dedicated to preserving the mission of World War II liaison commissioned aviators. These "forgotten heroes" provided vital functions such as observation, spotting, artillery fire control, forward air control, communications, command and control, medical evacuation, and many other functions that just "needed done" on the battlefield. In 1981, Bill Stratton, Hardy Cannon, and a group of men in San Antonio, Texas, formed the local group know today as ALS. Under the tutelage of Cannon, a master mechanic, the group in 1982 completed restoration of a 1941 Stinson L-1, a 1941 Taylorcraft L-2, a 1942 Aeronca L-3B, a Piper L-4 (a precursor to today's Legend Combat), a 1942 Stinson L-5, and a 1942 Interstate (L-8) S-1A.

Today, ALS appears with their privately owned aircraft at air shows and other gatherings to further their mission of keeping the memory of those forgotten heroes, the "Liaison Pilots", alive. The Texas Historic Commission has designated the Alamo Liaison Squadron as a bona fide flying historical museum.

To recognize ALS's efforts, and the generosity of Mrs. Ellen Kenne, American Legend Aircraft Company presented a plaque to Mrs. Kenne on August 9, 2008. The plaque reads as follows:

In recognition of their contributions to the 1st built Legend Combat aircraft, American Legend Aircraft Company acknowledges Alton Kenne of Freer, Texas, and his wife Ellen Kenne for their strong belief, keen interest, wisdom and enthusiasm, undying passion, kind efforts, and enduring support of their love of flying. American Legend Aircraft Company is proud to support the Kenne's efforts to preserve their Legend Combat as a modern flying example of the classic, familiar, and favorite liaison aircraft of World War II.

Alamo Liaison Squadron meets Wednesdays and Saturdays at Cannon Field, 53TX. Visitors are welcome.

Training & Flying Cubs Since 1946

Mike Hart of Hampton Airfield (7B3), North Hampton, New Hampshire, took delivery of his first Legend Cub at Sentimental Journey Fly-in in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, on June 17, 2008. Shortly thereafter, Hart was appointed as the first sales and support representative for American Legend Aircraft Company.

Some 33 years ago, Hart purchased, and has operated since, a pilot training and maintenance facility at Hampton Airfield. In addition to training and service, Mike also offers rental aircraft, hangar space, and shared ownership programs. The business is a team effort, as his wife Cheryl, also a pilot, shares the responsibilities. Mike and Cheryl both made their first solo in Cubs, a fitting reason to continue this heritage as they now train new pilots in the subtleties of tailwheel flying.

Hampton Airfield has been in operation since 1946. It was the former location of a Piper aircraft dealer. Historic Hampton Airfield is located along the New England coast, 30+ miles east of Manchester, New Hampshire, and 50+ miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. The field is considered a flying paradise with easy access to the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, Nova Scotia, Montreal and Quebec, Canada, and the state of Maine. The airfield's turf runway is 2100' long x 175' wide. Elevation is a scant 93' above sea level. The airport is open for public use--though keep a visual for low flying Cubs.

Mike Hart commented on the appointment, "Our primary focus is to introduce pilots to the Legend through training for tailwheel endorsements and the Sport Pilot license and the pure fun of flying this great aircraft. We have the maintenance facility and instructor roster to support the Legend. Our wide grass runway is a good place to help pilots learn conventional gear aircraft handling." He added, "We plan to offer a shared ownership program and incentives of free fuel or hangar space for potential owners."

I Learned To Fly In A Legend Cub

Thanks to everyone that made this day possible. 64 (my birth year) TP (my daughter's initials) is now setting comfortably in Jim's hanger in McKinney.

Jim - Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to fly us over to pick it up. To drive over would have diminished what was a great time. I am sure my plane will refuse to start if I ever move from your hanger—the Taj Mahal!

Stephanie and Megan - Thanks for paying for my little yellow Cub. You can borrow it anytime you're in town.

Harvest - I was just kidding, they can't borrow it. With low rates like yours I should get a second plane!

Darin and Kurt - You build great aircraft. I think my demographic is an untapped market—middle aged guy that can't fly but has test driven a corvette and realized it was too low to the ground to get in and out of! Sell 'em full retail but pay for their training with Dick! Oh, but don't let Kurt do the demo flight (flying me backwards over the runway in a headwind, what was he thinking???) "May your assembly line always be long and your backlog never ending!"

And to Dick - Our first flight together... I give you an A+ I'm really looking forward to learning from you. If I can reflect just half of your knowledge and passion for flying, I will consider myself a great success! And if you can put up with me, I'm sure we'll create some stories to tell. (Harvest, none involve any peril to the aircraft, but where does it show the deductible on my policy :-) )

I brought the family out to see my plane this evening. My daughter Tori (on the left in her pink Texas shirt, sorry Dick) and her best friend tried on the Bose headsets and sat in the cockpit for some pictures and pretend flying. What a great start. Thanks.

Mark A. Parsons, new pilot & Legend Cub owner

Can't Get Enough Of My Legend Cub

Is it going well?? How bout this weekend... 9.4 hrs and 24 landings, all but four on grass and NO touch-and-go's. 12 mph gusting to 22 in crosswind (my strip is East\West and the prevailing is SE) low and slow looking at wildlife, photographing American farmers harvesting wheat with three combines and three tractors abreast. 1st flight was with doors open for parents and kids, a nostalgia flight for my mother-in-law, and dropping flour bombs on friends. I'm waiting on the amphib floats next!

Legend Cub 31813 lives in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the downtown airport. It was bought on December 26th, 2007. It was bought as one of a pair. The other belonging to Doc Moore also based at downtown. We routinely fly together throughout the area. I have a cotton\corn farm 60 miles away on a river with fishing, skiing, and lounging, with a 2600 x 100' grass strip that we fly to regularly. It lives here as well. I bought the Cub because of the tantum seating, solo from either seat, both windows and doors open. After touring the Legend factory, seeing the impressive quality in the fabrication and manufacturing of the plane, I knew it was the plane for me. I have another plane for traveling, so I was interested in lower and slower. The other Cub types with bigger engines were of no interest to me. The 21st century is too fast so why not slow down and see a bit of it with the doors and windows open. I've taken passengers from as young as six to my 85-year-old mother-in-law. Everyone loves it and always wants to ride again. The Legend is light on the controls and very responsive. It handles winds of all types very well, regardless of wheel or 3-point landings. The Cub is a celebrity at the airfield, so anytime I ask someone for a ride, they're waiting for me at the field before I get there. I fly the Cub for photography, observation of crops, sightseeing, checking out my favorite fishing spot, and traveling for the $100 hamburger.

Introducing New Fans To Flying

The Sovereign Nation of the Chitimacha may not be the first Native American Indian Tribe that comes to mind. Nonetheless, this Louisiana-based settlement dates back to around 500 A.D. Today some 350 Tribal members live on the Chitimacha Reservation, with a total Tribal membership of approximately 950. The Tribe's largest commercial development is the highly successful Cypress Bayou Casino, established in 1985. Residents of Louisiana and visitors from afar enjoy the gaming, restaurants, and entertainment of the stunning Casino. Located adjacent to the Casino is a little-known grass airstrip.

A recent visitor to the Casino asked the owner and friend of this Legend Cub if he could look over the airplane. Respectively, Danny Broussard and Greg Rodriguez obliged. The young man may just be on the path to fulfilling a dream of flying. What a better way to make this happen than in a Legend Cub!

You can find the airstrip as Chitimacha Air Park Airport (2LS2), in St. Mary Parish, Charenton, LA. The airport is privately operated. FOR LANDING APPROVAL CALL 1-800-284-4386.

1st Customer Proclaims KwikBild "The Experience Of A Lifetime"

I had always wanted to build a plane. Even when I was building flying models as a boy, the thought of one day building a real plane was always in the back of my mind. However, at first school and then later a career and raising a family always came first.

Now, with my kids grown and living their own lives, the dreams came back. I mentioned to my family in passing that I was thinking about building a plane next year. Their response surprised me. My wife said, "Go for it," and my boys said, "Why wait till next year!"

A Cub was a natural choice. I had learned to fly in a Cub and had a lot of fun flying them on wheels and skis before I went into the Air Force. The Texas Sport KwikBild program was perfect for me. I was unwilling to sacrifice family time for the many months, or even years, required to build the average kit. A few weeks at a time I could handle, especially when I was able to schedule around family plans. The KwikBild program at Sulphur Springs was one of the best decisions of my life, and without a doubt the best way to build a plane.

Being able to totally concentrate on the project was invaluable. No constant interruptions, no calls, none of the inevitable distractions that always seem to occur when you start something. Having expert help available saves an amazing amount of time. They know all of the mistakes you can make from years of personal experience. Nothing like instant credibility!

It was an absolutely wonderful opportunity to bond with my two sons. We had worked on cars together as they were growing up, but extended time together became rare since they had grown up and left home. The days we spent together provided me with a lifetime of cherished memories. They came from both ends of the country to help me build a plane. I am so proud of them. While neither are pilots, as a result of our experience, both have started to work on their Sport Pilot rating. In fact, we are already planning to build another Cub next year.

It was really fun being around the Texas Sport folks. They all truly love what they are doing, and take tremendous pride in their work Their enthusiasm about building planes is contagious. Just imagine, nothing to do all day but talk about and build planes.

I can't say enough about the great support and encouragement we received from the entire staff at Texas Sport and American Legend. The whole atmosphere was great. It was like friends helping friends learn new skills. There was a constant emphasis on safety and doing quality work.

Finally, there is no way to adequately describe the feeling of seeing all the pieces come together and start looking like a real plane. It is only exceeded by the sound of the first engine start and the joy felt on the first takeoff. Looking out the window at a plane you built as the sun starts to set is pure joy. Besides, how often do you get an opportunity to fly a brand new plane for the first time? Possibly never!

This was truly the experience of a lifetime. My feet still haven't touched the ground. The only downside was that my boys were really disappointed in being unable to witness the first flight. We'll fix that next year!

Bob Declerck, 1st Texas Sport KwikBild customer

Life Is Good Flying A Legend Cub

"Life Is Good!" was the subject of an email sent to American Legend. It was sent by a Legend Cub owner, and very outspoken proponent of the company. When asked about the kind of flying this owner likes to do in his Legend Cub, he stated that he revels in taking a leisurely tour around his home state of Arkansas. In commenting on whom he flies with, this pilot replied, "Me and anybody I can get to climb in the plane with me. My Legend Cub has put fun back into flying for me. It lends itself so readily to leisurely, scenic, low-demand flying."

Joe Edwards was introduced to flying by his father, a test pilot for Cessna. Joe is now in his sixties and boasts having had the flying bug since he was a teenager. He first met American Legend at Sun 'n Fun this past April. What impressed him most about Legend was the attention to detail and the apparent quality of the Legend Cub. Edwards has rebuilt planes in the past. He also owns another airplane, a Beech Bonanza. Adding that he is in a position to know the difference, he stated, "The Legend Cub is one of the best around." He reaffirmed, "It is the best quality product on the market."

American Legend Thrives On Happy Customers

I would like to say a few things to thank the wonderful crew of people that make up American Legend Aircraft Company. From the outset of my phone and email correspondence with Tim I was treated as though their mission in life was to make me happy. I had not flown since 1980 because of an injury and never took my physical again.

When LSA became a reality it seemed too good to be true! I began investigating and talking to all the available manufacturers. Legend stood out way above the crowd as a real aircraft company with a staff of experienced management all the way through to the welders--whose work looked like a jeweler had done it. Every facet of construction was seriously attended to and checked for quality control by people who loved their work and cared about it.

Kurt Senhert was assigned the unfortunate task of bringing a very rusty old pilot up to current standards as the cheif pilot. He will never forget what I put him through, yet his only concern was my safety and happiness with my aircraft.

I should mention that my Legend was the first Jabiru-powered model sold to the public. Extra time was taken by the assembly crew to give me the instruments of my choice and fit the whole thing together into a panel that is beautiful. It is a true "one of a kind" aircraft that I love to fly. When I go to the airport I don't "get in" my airplane, I "put it on" like a comfortable pair of jeans that gives me wings and makes dreams I never thought possible come true.

When I left Legend for the long trip back to the Florida Keys, Darin Hart, an owner of the company, took time out of his busy schedule to ride all the way home with me since it had been so long since I had flown cross country. We had a great time together, and my factory support since then has been above and beyond the call of any other product I have ever purchased! I cannot give the Legend crew, or the aircraft, a higher recommendation.

Gerald Ward, 1st Jabiru-equipped Legend Cub owner

Creating A Legend Cub

I am delighted with my airplane and the folks at the factory are a pleasure to work with. Let me rephrase that, the airplane is great... and the people at the factory are even better!

All I Want For My Birthday Is A Brand New Legend Cub

I came to Sulphur Springs to check out American Legend Aircraft Company in March of 2005. Was given the "grand tour" of the facilities and liked what I saw. The prototype had just flown and I insisted on flying her, as I had bought a Kit Fox that I had never flown and had been disappointed. Was commissioned as an honorary "test pilot" and allowed to fly her. Was really impressed, flew more like a Super Cub and was allowed to order one, on the spot. Was told my order would not be for the first production aircraft, but right up there. It was my first brand new aircraft after a lifetime of flying and many aircraft. Also, it would be my birthday present to myself. Imagine my surprise when I received invoice number 0001 suitably framed, accompanied by a birthday card signed by the entire staff of the company! Definitely a "hard sell tactic."

Aircraft 007, "Yellow Peril," delivered October 12th, again with the full turn out of the American Legend crew, from President to "Head Custodian," with a presentation of the keys and a royal send off. Had to peel Charlie Keen out of the aircraft as he continued to do "last minute detail work" on the aircraft and his attention to details to make her "perfect" was really appreciated. Three days of good weather and 24.85 on the tach, I arrived at 1W1 Camas/Washougal Grove Field in Washington State. A great, and uneventful wonderful cross county flight. The aircraft continues to give great service and I am very happy with her and your organization.

Best regards Hal.

PS - You cannot stop an "ol man" from talking!

PPS - Didn't say anything about all the great dinners you guys provided, didn't want to start any precedence.

Harold Bagnall

Drawing A Crowd With My Legend Cub

I love the crowd that "Grasshopper" draws when I fly some place. It's just a fun airplane. It is a gas to fly.

I quickly made the decision to purchase at Sun 'n Fun because of its extra width, its double doors, electrical system, and the fuel system with all fuel in the wings. Furthermore, I felt good about the founders of the company whom I met there. I remember meeting Kurt and Tim, and instructor Danny Goggans, and feeling good about them as people. I trusted them with my deposit on an airplane from a company that I hadn't heard of before.

I'm entirely pleased with my Legend Cub! I'm looking forward to flying it some more!

Chris Shaker

Flying At 1000' AGL With The Windows Open

I am happy offer my comments on my new Legend Cub. First let me comment on American Legend Aircraft in general. My purchase was a pleasant experience from my initial contacts, to my meeting everyone and flying the plane at Sun 'n Fun in 2005, to my trip to Texas to pick up the plane in October. It was like dealing with friends the whole way. Everyone at American Legend was extremely nice and helpful. They made my room reservations, treated my wife and I to lunch and provided the check ride and two hours of dual required by my insurance company.

About the plane... I elected to fly her home to Georgia solo. This was by far my longest cross-country. I did have a contingency plan of hiring an instructor to fly with me, but I felt completely comfortable after the dual and check ride. Then came the fun part, flying from Texas to Georgia at 1000 to 2000 feet with the windows opened the entire way! What a great way to see the country. It took about 11-1/2 hours over two days. The most memorable event was crossing the Mississippi River and looking at the barge traffic crawling along.

This is the 5th plane I have owned since obtaining my private in 1984. It is the only "new" plane I have ever owned and by far the most fun to fly. If low and slow is your favorite way of flying (as it is mine) then the Legend Cub is your plane, and the best part is that you don't even need a medical!

Maybe I'll see you guys at Sun 'n Fun this year. Best regards.

Jimmy Watson, Legend Cub "Peaches" owner

1st Customer & Honorary American Legend Employee

This is the best aircraft to fit my mission for flying, and the best possible Cub that I could have found on the market today. Also, there is that kick I get every time somebody sees the airplane and finally realizes it's not a restored J-3, but a new airplane. Then they look closer and are always impressed with the design and the workmanship.

Nothing Compares To A Legend Cub

Just a quick note to let you know how much I am enjoying my new Legend Cub. In the last three months I have put 70 hours on her and I enjoy flying it more everyday. I have owned a J-3 Cub, and several Aeronca Champs, and they just don't compare. Buying from a new company made me a little nervous at first but you guys have gone way beyond my expectations and delivered a beautiful airplane on time. If anyone in Florida wants to look at a Legend Cub, or go for a ride, don't hesitate to call me. I'd be happy to share the fun.

Finding The Perfect 10 And Filling The Nostalgic Void

I haven't taken delivery of my Legend Cub, so I can only imagine the excitement. First, I have three grandsons and a granddaughter (9, 7, 4 and 2 years old) who are so excited they can hardly stand it. I presently have a biplane, a T-6, and a better-than better-than-new 182 in my hangar.

There's still a nostalgic void in my collection and The Legend Cub will more than fill that void. I spent a year-long journey studying the pros and cons of, and looking for, a vintage Cub. I looked at a dozen 10 on a scale of 10 Cub restorations. When compared to the Legend, the salient facts swung me to the Legend.

Sincerely,

Jim Wilson, professional photographer, Jim Wilson Photography

Wheels, Floats, Or Skis... Backcountry In A Legend Cub

Please know that I feel very connected. The Legend is a wonderful little airplane and the company is a very competent manufacturer.

Thanks
Dave Finger

P.S. We flew 400 miles north of Toronto Canada in the Legend (now on floats) to do some fishing in the bush country. No roads no electric no phones. The little cub did just fine!
