American Legend Aircraft Company Introduces the Legend Cub

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, APRIL 12, 2005 - American Legend Aircraft Company introduced the Legend Cub light-sport airplane at its first appearance at the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual Sun 'n Fun Fly-in today in Lakeland, Florida. The Legend Cub is an all-new factory-built aircraft, designed in the spirit of the legendary Piper J-3 Cub.

The Legend Cub combines the best of the J-3, PA-11, and PA-18 designs while maintaining its S-LSA classification. Similar in appearance to the J-3, the Legend Cub utilizes a J-3 wing design, PA-11 struts, and outboard wing attachments like the PA-18 Super Cub. A 3-inch wider cockpit provides increased elbow room. Additionally, fuel is stored in the wings allowing for solo flight from the forward seat. The Legend Cub comes with a choice of PA-11 style closed cowl or J-3 style "eyebrows."

In developing the Legend Cub concept, Tim Elliott, company president, commented, "The idea was not to rebuild old Cubs, or build new Cubs in their original form. Instead, the goal of American Legend Aircraft Company was to take the best of all the light Cubs, build a great aircraft, and offer that under the new Light-Sport Aircraft certification category." Elliott added, "We kept the simplicity and style of the original, while engineering in all of the latest safety options and operator comforts."

Additional features of the Legend Cub include both right and left clamshell doors providing a more open cockpit feel and allowing the float version to dock from either side. Two 11-gallon wing tanks provide increased range, in addition to an improved center-of-gravity over the original J-3 design that required solo operation from the rear seat. Maintenance requirements on the Legend Cub will allow as much as 75-percent of the work to be performed by its owner. Optional equipment on the Legend Cub includes Vortex Generators, Baumann floats, Dynon EFIS, and Garmin radio/transponders.

The Legend Cub is a two-place, single piston-engine powered aircraft designed to meet Light-Sport Aircraft category certification requirements. It will have an empty weight of 850 lbs. The Legend Cub is propelled by a 100-horsepower Continental O-200 engine with electric start. With the optional floats, the aircraft will be capable of water takeoffs and landings. The Legend Cub is bringing back the enjoyment and economics of general aviation aircraft for today’s flying enthusiast.
