American Legend Aircraft Company Breaks Ground on New Production and Delivery Facilities
SULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, DECEMBER 16, 2005 – American Legend Aircraft Company announced today the construction of a new facility that will house its aircraft production operations and a new customer delivery center. The location of Legend’s new facilities will remain on Sulphur Spring Municipal Airport (KSLR) in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Ground breaking for the facility took place in early in November 2005.
Construction is presently underway for two buildings: a 20,000-square-foot hangar and an adjacent 5,000-square-foot hangar. The larger structure will be used for aircraft fabrication, assembly, and R&D for future projects. The second hangar will be used for sales and marketing. By continuing to use the 21,000-square-foot hangar space currently under lease, the company’s facilities will be more than doubled to 45,000 square feet.
With the new facilities, Legend will employ state-of-the-art, lean manufacturing processes, quality standards, and continuous improvement (or Kaizen) management practices to produce its Legend Cub. As production increases, the current base of 40 employees will be expanded. Production capacity is expected to increase from the current four aircraft per month to eight aircraft per month by utilizing the new facilities.
Tim Elliott, president of American Legend Aircraft Company, commented on the new facility, “We could not be more proud of our new buildings. Having already delivered Legend Cubs to many satisfied customers, the new facilities will provide us with an opportunity to further increase our production capabilities. The new facilities signify our commitment to meeting delivery promises.”
Bryan Hurley, vice president of manufacturing, commented further, “Our goal for the new plant was to scale up our manufacturing capacity to meet scheduled deliveries and reduce lead-times for future customers. With the new buildings, we are able to create a natural flow from the component level through final assembly operations. These new facilities allow us to start with a clean sheet of paper to design a more efficient manufacturing operation.”
The Legend Cub is a two-place, single engine piston-powered aircraft designed to meet Light-Sport Aircraft category certification requirements. It has an empty weight of 850 lbs. The Legend Cub is propelled by a 100-horsepower Continental O–200 engine with electric start. Equipped with optional floats, the aircraft is capable of water takeoffs and landings. The Legend Cub is bringing back the enjoyment and economics of general aviation aircraft to today’s flying enthusiast.
